The Problem With Flashcards

Flashcards are a staple of language learning. They’re quick, convenient, and make us feel productive. But here’s the problem: just because you go to the effort to try and memorize a word doesn’t mean you’ll actually remember it when you need it.

Think about it — how many times have you reviewed a flashcard deck, felt like you knew the words, and then completely blanked when trying to use them in a conversation? That’s because memorization and true retention are not the same thing.

A better approach? Use flashcards as a supplement, not your primary study strategy. The real key to remembering vocabulary is meaningful exposure and active use.
