The 3 Things I Do as a Neurodivergent Language Learner to Enhance my Long-Term Memory Retention

I’m dyslexic and I have ADHD so daily tasks are a struggle let alone something as time intensive as language learning. But these techniques have worked great for me so they might help you too.

Utilize Multisensory Learning Techniques

Everyone is a visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and read/write learner.

Studying the same information in multiple modes is proven to improve memory. Listen to a song, do a dance, and watch a video all about the same grammar point and you’ll remember it forever.

But not all language lends itself to all learning modes, so mix and match and see what works for you.

Implement Spaced Repetition

Spaced Repetition Systems (SRS) are based on the idea that we should review something right before we forget it.

Most language learning apps have some SRS element built into them but Anki is the most popular flashcard app. Whatever app you use try to be consistent.

For neurodivergent learners consistency can be difficult so remember that forgetting is also a part of the learning process.
